The Frankton Model Shop began shortly after World War II, founded by Alf Leong, an expert model plane builder and flyer.In the mid-80s, Geoff and David Leong took over until the early 2000s. The Toia family purchased the business in December 2022. Nathan Toia, who joined the team in 1991, contributed significantly to its success, boasting extensive modelling experience and multiple NZ National Championship titles, as well as representing NZ at several World Championships.

Scale Model Clubs & Non-Profit Modelling-Related Entities
IPMS Auckland
IPMS Auckland is a branch of IPMS New Zealand, which is a society of scale model enthusiasts, whose interest it is to develop and promote scale modelling, both as a hobby and art form, within NZ. Meets 3rd Tuesday of each month at the
Sports Lounge, Royal Oak Bowling Club, 146 Selwyn Street, Onehunga.
Waikato Scale Model Club
The Waikato Scale Model Club, active since the early 1990s, has about 15 core members and 10 more participating as they can. It fosters a supportive environment for all skill levels, adding a social element to the hobby.
They meet monthly in person and hold Zoom meetings every Thursday, where members share knowledge and improve each other’s skills.
Our members create models from materials like plastic, resin, metal, and wood. We showcase diverse subjects, including aircraft, military vehicles, cars, ships, figures, trucks, and imaginative science fiction creations.
We meet in the Johnsonville Community Hall on the last Wednesday of each month, except December. Meetings are in the Trust Room, upstairs from the Moorefield Road entrance, starting at 7:30 PM and usually ending between 9:30 and 10 PM.
MSMC is a group of scale modelling enthusiasts who like to meet, share and discuss scale modelling. You can join us every third Thursday in the Milson Community Centre, Palmerston North, at 7:30pm.
Popular genres include aircraft, armour, vehicles, figures and busts, dioramas and maritime subjects, but any scale modelling subject is welcome.
Initially a branch of The Central Otago Model Society (IPMS) Inc., our inaugural workshop took place on 11/05/2003. IPMS Southland became an official entity on 16/06/2005. Presently, we host casual workshops on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Meeting at Saint Patrick's Church Hall on View Street, members engage in their "projects," exchange modelling experiences, and frequently commiserate over their challenges and lack of progress, among other things.
